Some Year 6 thoughts about the project...

Bisma

Personally this project has had a great impact on me. It has made me think about the history of this school and the area that I am living in. It has helped me to understand that the government, MPs and presidents are not always right – they can be wrong. This school is a school that welcomes different people from different backgrounds and treats them equally and as family.

Sohaib

In my opinion my school has a very interesting history. Enoch Powell was wrong – in our school we are all friends.

Lateesha

This project has shown me that Whitmore Reans is a caring and welcoming place. They welcome everyone from anywhere here! When I came to this school I thought West Park was just going to be like every other school but actually, it is one of a kind. Coming to this school has made me a smart and intelligent pupil. I am now a member of the school council and training to become a Young Interpreter! Every part of the performance was very meaningful and touching. It’ll be a performance we’ll never forget. It’s going to be remembered forever.

Prusha

This project has shown me that no matter what, this community will stay united. I think the performance we created was amazing. I think we should do another performance for the media people.

Hela

I have learned a lot about this school. I knew about immigrants coming but I didn’t know that this school was amongst the first of this country's multicultural schools. I think of this place as more than just a school now. I think of it as a welcoming place for people from all backgrounds. If this school were a person it would be someone holding out a welcoming hand to a newly arriving person.

Haseeb

I thought that Whitmore Reans was a boring place. But now I don’t. It actually welcomes people.

Jaafar

I am proud that I came to this school.

Ola

In this project I have learnt many things, such as the history of racism in this school and community. I have also learnt that racism is a strong thing and can hurt people.

This project has changed the way I look at Whitmore Reans by teaching me how it changed from a city that was only for white people to a city that is diverse and has different cultures and a way of living. Our scene about the refugees has shown people what other people have been through and what people are still going through.

Seheir

Through this project I have learned about the true meaning of Sanctuary and what it means to people who have lost everything, including a family and a home.

Abdullah

This school project had a big impact on me personally. I thought Whitmore Reans was not very nice and welcoming because I saw some fighting in the streets, parks and alleyways. West Park Primary showed how it can make the area a better place by being a sanctuary for people from all around the world and by welcoming everybody.

There was once a class of children who saw a black person for the first time in their lives. The children were scared, and not sure if they should be that person’s friend. The black child talked a different language, ate weird smelling food and didn’t look like the white children. But a few days later, they mixed and all of the children played, talked and socialized together as if they were siblings from one family, treating each other as brothers and sisters.
