Some Year 5 thoughts about the project...

Zaynab

Ever since we started this project I have started to understand people more and their journeys of arriving here. I have learnt that Wolverhampton only had white people in it but then a lot of immigrant people arrived and that a lot of people didn’t like that. I have learnt a lot, but in a fun way instead of just sitting on my chair and listening.

I learnt that people were invited after the second world war from other countries to help build our country again.

Now I see that our school is a special school because it has lots of people in it from different countries.

I can now tell other people how much I know about the community and the school and be confident about our history. I thought the performance was outstanding. I would now like to interview more people.

Zeeshan Ali

I learnt a lot doing this project. Especially how to make a better community, by getting on with all black and white people. We are all human beings. We should love and care for everyone. If we did this performance again, I would want to be part of the bhangra dancing group because it looks like fun.

Through this project I have learned about the journeys of different people from different countries. And more importantly I learnt that we can all work together. Whitmore Reans is a better place now that people of different races and countries are joined as one and work together and communicate and don’t let anyone divide them. We should all respect each other and work as one.

Blossom

This journey has been fantastic and one I will never forget. I’ve learnt so many things, including about when the children went out to play from this school on the first day it opened, and were told to get off the field by other children. They were telling our children that their skin colour was horrible, but the children from this school ignored them and remained united.

I prefer being at this school in 2017 because racism won’t happen here. And even if it does, it will be dealt with.

Abdulhakeem

When I first came to this country, I was scared and shy. But now I have many friends and everybody helps me when I am stuck. I understand when people have to leave their country and go on dangerous journeys, because I was in the same position.

I think I have a part in this community. I help others. We are the roots of the new tree.

In 50 years, I think the school will be famous for being a school of sanctuary and the way that it welcomes the world.

Maria

West Park Primary school is much more than just an ordinary Primary. There used to be only one language spoken here, but now we have 35+ languages spoken. I have much more understanding of my school, of our school. I feel as if everyone of us are connected to each other, all coming from different countries.

Every child deserves a place to feel safe - to have a place of sanctuary.

I loved the emotional music in our play, the Syrian lullaby, the bhangra dancing…

Victory

I have learnt that everybody should support each other and be friendly no matter what is your colour. If we weren’t made to be together, there should be a big indestructible wall to separate us, but that won’t ever be built, because we should live together as one.

I now know that my school is the most welcoming school ever. When I first came to this school I was very shy but I was welcomed here by everyone in the school council and community – like no other school I have been to. Each and every day it brings a smile to my face. Me and my family felt like we found a place of sanctuary.
